Ed Sheeran says he is currently enjoying the best physical shape of his life. The 34-year-old Sapphire hitmaker shared details of his recent health transformation during a conversation with Andy Cohen on Sirius XM’s Small Stage Series.

He explained that last year he had gained a noticeable amount of weight, so he made a decision to work out intensively in order to lose it. The change quickly became more than just about weight loss, as he found himself motivated to test his limits. “I had gained quite a bit of weight last year, so I told myself, ‘I’m going to hit the gym hard and try to lose a stone,’” Sheeran revealed. Later, he admitted that the challenge grew into something bigger. “I’ve never had a six-pack in my life, so I thought I’d try to see if I could finally get one.”

Although motivated, Sheeran acknowledged that the journey hasn’t been easy. He said he often slips up, especially when social events tempt him to drink a couple of beers, which slows down his progress. Still, he emphasized that overall things are going well and that he genuinely feels stronger and healthier than ever before.

This isn’t the first time Sheeran has focused on improving his health. In December 2019, he revealed that he had lost 50 pounds after giving up smoking and discovering a love for running. At the time, he explained that quitting smoking had damaged his lungs, and running became the best way to restore them.

Sheeran also mentioned that he is not particularly drawn to gyms. Instead, outdoor exercise has worked better for him, especially running, which he said helps reset his body thanks to fresh air.

His commitment to a healthier lifestyle became stronger during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he abandoned several unhealthy habits. In May 2021, he told BBC Radio 1 that it was the first time he truly felt healthy. He said he had started exercising daily, cut back on fast food, and eliminated routines that had previously weighed him down.
