Lubero faces high infant mortality
In the Lubero Territory of North Kivu, in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, local health authorities report that at least three infants die each day due to a lack of medical care in the area.
The figures come from a report by the Midwives’ Association in Lubero Territory.
According to the report, over the past three months, 92 infants aged between one day and 28 days have died, primarily due to the absence of adequate neonatal care services.
Gerlas Kasiko, President of the Midwives’ Association in Lubero, stated: “From Kanyabayonga to Musienene, we do not have specialized services for newborns that meet required standards, which results in daily deaths among infants aged one day to 28 days.”
The World Bank notes that in the Democratic Republic of Congo, 75 out of every 1,000 children under the age of five are at risk of dying.
