Canal + snaps up DSTV
Biggest company in France and globally, Canal+, has completed the acquisition of MultiChoice, the South African-based company that owns other platforms such as M-Net, DStv, GOtv, SuperSport, Showmax, and others.
MultiChoice is one of the world’s leading companies. Founded in 1994, it has provided various services for 30 years related to broadcasting, video distribution, security services, and sports betting.
Maxime Saada, CEO of Canal+ Group who has now gained customers in the 50 countries where MultiChoice operated said that acquiring this company is an example of what great achievements can be made.
Maxime Saada stated: “This is a synergy of the strengths we can invest in to innovate in Europe, Africa, and Asia.”
On the other hand, Calvo Mawela, head of Canal+ Africa, said: “This deal will bring many opportunities and benefits to the company as well as to the African market in general.”
MultiChoice was purchased for over 2 billion US dollars. The company generates at least $49.98 billion annually, with a net income of $1.78 billion per year.

It operates in over 50 countries including the Scandinavian countries, Benelux, Italy, Eastern Europe, Greece, Cyprus, Nigeria, South Africa (where its headquarters are based), as well as other regions of the world.
In April 2024, it was announced that Canal+ intended to acquire MultiChoice, and just two months later it revealed that the legal and regulatory discussions were proceeding well.
Since acquiring the company, Canal+ has stated it plans to strengthen its cooperation with South Africans in all sectors from large corporations to small and medium businesses across the audio and visual content market.
Canal+, which mainly operates in France and broadcasts most of its programs in French, was officially launched in 1983 and has been in operation for at least 42 years. It was founded by three businessmen: Léo Scheer, André Rousselet, and Pierre Lescure.
