RIB arrests school staff over child Sex abuse
Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has arrested a student-discipline officer, known as an animateur, at Saint Trinité de Ruhango Secondary School on suspicion of sexually abusing two female students.
The alleged abuse reportedly occurred on December 7, 2025. Preliminary findings indicate the staff member is suspected of summoning the girls to his office at different times under the pretext of discussing their behaviour, and then exploiting the situation to sexually assault them in exchange for avoiding punishment.
RIB spokesperson Dr. Murangira B. Thierry said the institution has zero tolerance for sexual abuse against minors, stressing that such acts are especially unacceptable when committed by someone entrusted with children’s care.
“It is entirely unacceptable and cannot be tolerated that someone who calls themselves an educator would be suspected of involvement in such cruel acts against the very children they are meant to protect. This must stop,” Murangira said.
As investigations continue, the suspect is being held at the RIB station in Ruhango while his case file is being compiled for submission to prosecutors.
Under Law No. 68/2018 of 30 August 2018, adults convicted of defiling a child face a prison sentence of between 20 and 25 years.
This is not the first time the school has faced allegations of sexual abuse involving staff. In both 2023 and 2024, cases surfaced of teachers impregnating students, with several educators investigated in connection with those incidents.
