Ruben Amorim’s reign at Manchester United is facing fresh scrutiny after a 3-1 defeat to Brentford left his side still searching for consistency nearly a year into his tenure.

The loss means United have now gone 33 Premier League games under Amorim without managing consecutive victories. His record stands at just nine wins, a concerning 27.3% win rate that is the lowest of any manager since Sir Alex Ferguson.

United had hoped that last week’s victory over 10 men Chelsea would spark a turnaround, but the momentum evaporated quickly in West London. Brentford dominated the midfield battle, punishing the weaknesses in Amorim’s three-at-the-back system.

Amorim insisted after the game that tactics were not the issue, but critics point to his exposed two-man midfield pivot as a recurring problem. Once again, Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte were overrun by a more balanced opposition trio.

Brentford head coach Keith Andrews, in his first senior season, highlighted how his side deliberately created overloads in midfield to exploit United’s shape. His adaptability stood in sharp contrast to Amorim’s stubborn approach.

The defeat leaves United in the bottom half of the Premier League table heading into October, raising doubts about the club’s direction despite more than £200 million spent on new forwards Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo.

Sesko managed his first goal for the club against Brentford, but there was little sign of cohesion in attack. United’s away form remains especially alarming, with no league wins on the road since March.

Gary Neville has already warned that lingering in the bottom half by October could spell disaster for Amorim. With Sunderland visiting Old Trafford next, failure to win could see pressure on the head coach reach breaking point.

Amorim has maintained that he is not worried about his position, stressing his focus is on improving performances. However, reports suggest he has offered his resignation before, fueling speculation about his long-term future.

Ten months into the job, United remain fragile, inconsistent, and unable to build momentum. Unless results improve quickly, Amorim’s grip on the Old Trafford dugout may not last much longer.
