Rapper Papa Cyangwe, whose real name is Abijuru King Lewis, held a concert on Saturday night to mark five years in the music industry. The celebration, however, was overshadowed by persistent sound system failures that interrupted several performances and prevented some invited artists from appearing on stage.

The event took place at Kigali Universe on November 22 and brought together a diverse lineup of emerging and established musicians. While many performers managed to excite the crowd, recurring technical issues created frustration among both artists and fans.

Rising talents opened the evening with energetic performances. Young Zaki, known for his hit “Motari,” delivered a lively set before passing the stage to Taykun Degree, who was warmly received by the audience. Hertos, popular for his collaboration “Karite Jone” with Diez Dolla, also performed, followed by The Nature with his track “Umuvuno.” The momentum shifted when Ice Mello stormed off the stage after his microphone went silent mid-performance, forcing him to leave before completing his song.

More established artists continued to push through the challenges. Racine performed several of his popular tracks, including “Agahugu,” “Bizacamo,” “My Guy,” and “Nzura.” B Threy followed with crowd favorites such as “Nyumvira,” “Dejavu,” “Ni e?” and “Nituebue,” while Fireman energized the venue with “Abahungu ba Muzika,” “Original,” and “Itangishaka,” the latter performed with King James.

Papa Cyangwe made a dramatic entrance accompanied by dancers dressed in traditional Rwandan attire. He began performing “Ngaho,” but before completing the song, the sound system abruptly shut down. During the blackout, he addressed the crowd, expressing his gratitude and happiness to see so many supporters in attendance. After several minutes, the sound was restored, allowing him to continue the show with “Sana,” “Ku Nsutsu” featuring Juno Kizigenza, “Imbeba” with Igor Mabano, and “It’s Okay” alongside Afrique and Fireman. His set was complemented by models who walked across the stage as he performed.

He later invited Ish Kevin to join him for their collaboration “Bakalo.” Ish Kevin stayed on stage to perform his own song “Amakosi” before exiting. Moments later, Zeo Trap attempted to take the stage but found the equipment malfunctioning again, forcing him to retreat backstage until the system was restored.

Hip-hop veteran Riderman faced similar challenges. After opening with “Inyuguti ya R,” he performed other songs with almost no sound amplification, relying mostly on a handheld microphone and the crowd’s support. He thanked the audience for their patience before yielding the stage for the final segment of the evening.

As the night came to a close, MC Iradukunda Bertrand formally ended the event, giving the DJ a brief moment to play out the crowd. Two anticipated performers never appeared on stage. Yampano did not perform due to the disrupted schedule, while P-Fla arrived at the venue but was unable to perform because the event had already extended beyond its allocated time.

What was meant to be a milestone celebration for Papa Cyangwe concluded with mixed reactions. Some fans applauded the performers who managed to deliver despite the obstacles, while others expressed disappointment that repeated sound failures compromised the experience.
