The “Kigali Dutarame” concert has set a new standard for traditional music events in Rwanda, proving that cultural performances can attract massive audiences even in the country’s largest venues. The show, held at BK Arena on November 22, drew thousands of spectators, challenging promoters who have long been reluctant to stage traditional concerts in major facilities.

The event attracted a wide and diverse audience, with a strong showing from young people, families, and several government leaders. Among the officials in attendance were the Mayor of Kigali, the Minister of Education, and the Minister of Health.

The crowd was entertained by a distinguished lineup of artists, including Yvan Muzika, DJ Pius, Cecile Kayirebwa, Rocky Kimomo, Nyambo Jessica, and Kadafi Pro. The inclusion of celebrated cultural icons alongside contemporary performers highlighted the relevance and growing appeal of traditional music among younger generations.

Organised in partnership with the City of Kigali and MTN Rwanda, the concert impressed many with its atmosphere and attendance. Tickets sold out nearly three hours before the show began, underscoring the strong demand for cultural events of this scale.

Kigali Mayor Samuel Dusengiyumva praised the turnout, emphasizing that the city is committed to promoting Rwandan culture through regular, high-quality entertainment events. He described the evening as the beginning of a new chapter for cultural celebration in Kigali.

“We want to thank everyone who came in large numbers to celebrate Rwandan culture,” Dusengiyumva said. “The City of Kigali is dedicated to elevating our cultural heritage. We want residents to enjoy, relax, and feel proud of Rwandan culture. After working hard and earning money, people deserve a place to unwind and connect with who we are.”

He also expressed gratitude to the youth and parents who attended with their children, stressing the importance of passing cultural values to the younger generation. “We appreciate the young people who showed up in big numbers and the parents who brought their children. This is just the beginning of many exciting cultural events in Kigali.”

The concert’s success was also reflected in the energy of the performers and the response from the crowd. Teta Diana, who rarely performs at multiple shows in Kigali, thrilled the audience with a vibrant set. Traditional music legend Massamba Intore surprised Cecile Kayirebwa, who was celebrating her birthday, inviting her on stage to perform their iconic song “Inyange Muhorakeye.” The emotional moment moved thousands in attendance.

As Mayor Dusengiyumva noted, more events celebrating Rwandan culture are expected in the coming months, reinforcing the city’s commitment to cultural preservation and entertainment.
