A politician from Uganda and one of the country’s leading opposition figure, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as “Bobi Wine,” has condemned the Ugandan police for targeting his campaign activities ahead of the country’s 2026 presidential elections.

Bobi Wine is among the candidates cleared to contest in the elections and is expected to challenge Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who has been in power for over 40 years. Museveni is the world’s third-longest serving president after Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea and Paul Biya of Cameroon in non-monarchical states.

Ugandan police confirmed that videos circulating online show campaign materials belonging to Bobi Wine being vandalized. The force said it had launched an investigation and would take necessary measures, including sanctions. Police made this announcement on Thursday, September 25, 2025.

According to police, the actions seen in the videos were meant to quell unrest, but supporters of Bobi Wine and his party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), rejected that explanation.

Despite these incidents, Bobi Wine’s and NUP’s campaign activities are ongoing. He recently reaffirmed his bid to run for president of Uganda and called on all Ugandans to support him.

In a message shared on his social media platforms, Bobi Wine thanked Ugandan citizens for continuing to trust him and urged them to vote for him in the upcoming election that will determine the country’s leader up to 2031.

Bobi Wine  announced his intention to run for the top office in 2021 during an interaction with his followers on X (formerly Twitter).  At the time, he strongly criticized President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s decades-long rule.

Bobi Wine said: “Our country is one of the richest in terms of natural resources. So our problem is not a lack of wealth. Our problem is the lack of leadership , leadership that serves the people instead of exploiting them.”

During his 2021 campaign,  he highlighted that many Ugandan opposition figures had been harassed or even killed under Museveni’s rule, but vowed to keep fighting without losing hope and promised to bring such practices to an end.
