Liverpool Faces Selection Headache After Hugo Ekitike Red Card Against Everton
Hugo Ekitike’s one-game ban leaves Liverpool short upfront for their Premier League trip to Crystal Palace, forcing Arne Slot to choose between Isak, Chiesa, Gakpo, Wirtz, or Danns.
Liverpool will be without Hugo Ekitike for their upcoming Premier League clash with Crystal Palace after the French striker received a one-game ban for a “stupid” second yellow card against Everton. Ekitike, who has made a fast start at Anfield with five goals and an assist in eight appearances, had scored a late winner before being sent off for celebrating by removing his shirt.
Manager Arne Slot now faces a challenge in replacing the £79m summer signing, with Alexander Isak, Federico Chiesa, Cody Gakpo, Florian Wirtz (as a false nine), and young Jayden Danns among the options. Isak, who scored his first Liverpool goal against Southampton, remains Liverpool’s record signing but may not be fully fit for 90 minutes.
Chiesa impressed as a substitute against Southampton, providing two assists and proving he can adapt across the front line, though he has limited Premier League starts. Gakpo could return to his preferred left-wing role or step up as a central forward, but Slot has historically resisted using him as a main striker.
Alternatively, Slot could deploy a false nine system, with Wirtz, Szoboszlai, and Mac Allister competing for central midfield and attacking positions. The tactic was previously used successfully against Manchester City, though Palace’s compact five-man defence presents a unique challenge.
Finally, 19-year-old Jayden Danns offers a wildcard option. The youngster has scored three goals in ten appearances this season and could make his first Premier League start, though Slot may prefer to introduce him gradually.
With Ekitike’s suspension, Liverpool’s attacking depth will be tested at Selhurst Park, forcing Slot to make careful decisions to maintain momentum and challenge for the top of the table.
