Tinubu fires Nigeria’s Defence Chief after coup attempt
Following an attempted coup in Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu has dismissed General Christopher Musa, who was the Chief of Defence Staff of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
According to the President’s Media Adviser, Sunday Dare, the changes are “aimed at strengthening security and promoting professionalism within the Nigerian military.”
President Tinubu immediately appointed new leaders for the various branches of the armed forces as follows:
-
General Olufemi Oluyede replaced General Musa as Chief of Defence Staff.
-
Major General W. Shaibu was appointed Chief of Army Staff.
-
Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke became Chief of Air Staff.
-
Rear Admiral I. Abbas was named Chief of Naval Staff.
-
Major General E.A.P. Undiendeye retained his position as Director of Military Intelligence.
President Tinubu thanked the outgoing officials but urged the new appointees to prioritize integrity, cooperation, and professionalism in protecting the nation and ensuring the peace of its citizens.
These changes took effect immediately, as the Nigerian government continues to deny reports of an attempted or planned coup, maintaining that the country remains stable and secure.
