The United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, has joined calls for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan, following reports that tens of thousands of people have been killed in the city of Al Fashir.

An estimated 260,000 people, half of them children, are believed to be trapped in the Darfur capital after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) captured it.

Speaking in Bahrain on Saturday, Ms. Cooper condemned the “atrocities, mass killings, starvation, and the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war” in Darfur, saying that reports from the region are deeply horrifying.

She said: “In Sudan right now, there is only despair,” while addressing the Manama Dialogue Conference.

She added that although “progress” has been made on the Gaza issue, the international community “has failed to respond to the humanitarian catastrophe and the devastating conflict in Sudan.”

The RSF, which has been fighting the Sudanese government since 2023, has been accused of multiple human rights violations throughout the war.

Ms. Cooper also announced that the UK will send £5 million in aid to Sudan, including £2 million specifically to support survivors of sexual violence.

The aid announcement came after RSF forces took control of Al Fashir. Analysts say tens of thousands of people were killed in just two days, according to Sky News Africa correspondent Yousra Elbagir.
