Twenty-nine Arrested on Bobi Wine’s Campaign Trail for Defying Guidelines
Police in Wakiso District arrested 29 National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters for allegedly violating campaign regulations while accompanying party president and presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu popularly known as Bobi Wine on his campaign trail.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, the incident occurred on Monday as Bobi Wine was heading to Mityana District for a campaign rally.
"At Bujjuko Trading Centre along the Mityana Highway, a group of NUP supporters gathered, drummed, whistled, and blocked the road, disrupting traffic flow," Onyango said in a statement.
Security personnel reportedly issued several warnings before dispersing the crowd and arresting the individuals, who are now detained at Wakiso Police Division.
Police have reminded all presidential candidates and their supporters to adhere to campaign and traffic regulations, use only approved routes, and respect other road users.
The ongoing campaign season has been marked by increased tensions between opposition supporters and security agencies. Police have emphasized the need to maintain public order and safety during political activities.
