Arsenal’s £500m Emirates Stadium Expansion Could See Temporary Wembley Move
Arsenal plan a £500m Emirates expansion beyond 70,000 seats, with Wembley eyed as temporary home.
Arsenal is reportedly preparing a £500 million redevelopment of the Emirates Stadium that could see them temporarily relocate to Wembley while construction work takes place. The ambitious project aims to expand the North London venue’s capacity from 60,700 to over 70,000 seats, restoring Arsenal’s status as the club with the largest ground in London.
According to The Telegraph, the Gunners have been exploring several options to maximize capacity without significantly altering the stadium’s exterior. Plans include changing the gradient of the stands and adapting the internal seating structure to accommodate more supporters, while keeping the outer bowl largely unchanged.
The proposed redevelopment is driven by soaring demand for tickets. Arsenal’s season ticket waiting list now exceeds 100,000 fans, some of whom have waited years for an opportunity to buy one. The expansion would also boost matchday revenue and help the club meet Profit and Sustainability (PSR) and Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, potentially generating millions in extra income annually.
However, the project’s scale means the Gunners will likely need a temporary home during construction. Wembley Stadium has emerged as the leading option, mirroring Tottenham Hotspur’s two year stint at the national stadium during their own redevelopment. Arsenal previously played Champions League matches at Wembley in 1998 and 1999, and have enjoyed FA Cup success there in recent years.
The Emirates overhaul would be the first major redevelopment since the £390 million stadium opened in 2006. The club’s owners, the Kroenke family, are expected to leverage their experience in large-scale sports projects most notably the £4.1 billion SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles to guide the process. Planning permission, however, could take several years, with legal and logistical hurdles still to clear.
If completed, the expanded Emirates would not only transform Arsenal’s match day experience but also strengthen the club’s global commercial standing. For now, the project remains in its early planning phase, but optimism is growing among fans that the Gunners’ iconic home could soon enter a new era of scale and spectacle.
