Taylor Swift Clarifies Why She Won’t Headline the Super Bowl Halftime Show: "It Has Nothing to Do with Travis"
Pop icon Taylor Swift has set the record straight about why she won’t be performing at the Super Bowl Halftime Show, dismissing weeks of speculation linking her decision to her fiancé, Travis Kelce.
During her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday, October 6, Swift discussed her new album The Life of a Showgirl and addressed several rumors, including one suggesting that she turned down the Super Bowl due to concerns about her performance footage.
"That's not true," Swift said with a smile. "Jay-Z and I have always had a great relationship, and our teams talk sometimes, but it's never been a formal offer or anything like that. Honestly, I’m deeply invested in someone who already performs on that field, and what he does is far more intense than any halftime show.”
Swift went on to explain how emotionally challenging it is to watch her fiancé, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, play. “That sport is like violent chess,” she said. "It's gladiators without swords. The entire season, I’m focused on what he’s doing. Imagine if he’s out there putting his body on the line every week, and I’m across the field worrying about choreography, thinking, 'Should we do two verses of 'Shake It Off' into 'Blank Space'? It just doesn’t feel right.”
During the "Rumor Rundown" segment with Fallon, Swift addressed claims that she made a playful comment to Selena Gomez on her wedding day to music producer Benny Blanco.
"That never happened," Swift clarified. "I watched one of the most beautiful weddings I've ever seen. Selena was radiantthe most elegant bride imaginable. I gave a speech, but I kept it about her. No one wants a friend to hijack their wedding to talk about their own engagement," she joked, waving an imaginary ring.
She said her speech focused on their friendship and fashion choices as teenagers when they met in 2008.
Back then, it was all about deep V-necks and brightly colored skinny jeans,” she laughed. "Selena lived in long tank tops and tiny vests with Converse. I looked like I was late for a cowboy-themed prom. It was chaos—but the best kind."
Swift also confirmed that fellow musician Ed Sheeran found out about her engagement on Instagram. "He doesn't have a working phone," she said. "When the news broke, I realized we forgot to call Ed, but he understood. He’s family.”
Swift’s appearance on The Tonight Show continues her busy promotional tour for The Tortured Poets Department, released on October 3. Within hours, the album shattered Spotify’s single-day streaming record for 2023. “I can’t tell you how proud I am to share this album — it feels so right,” Swift wrote on Instagram after its release. She thanked longtime collaborators Max Martin and Shellback for helping her “paint this self-portrait.”
