Sandra Miraji Reveals Why She Stepped Away from Music for Six Years
Sandra Miraji, one of the first Rwandan women to boldly embrace Hip Hop, has opened up about why she has been absent from the music scene for the past six years. She says the break was not intentional, but rather the result of overwhelming responsibilities that kept her from giving fans the music they loved.
She shared her story during an interview on her newly launched podcast, explaining that although she has been off the radar musically, her passion for music has never faded. “I didn’t quit music. I just had so many responsibilities that weighed heavily on it,” she said.
“But I can never leave music it’s my life. When I wake up, I’m in music. Wherever I go, it’s me and music. My responsibilities have been too many lately, but I’ll be giving you something very soon.”
Why She Started Her Podcast
When asked why she launched her podcast, Miraji said it had been one of her long-standing dreams, even though circumstances repeatedly delayed it.“It was a dream I’ve had for almost two years. I always wanted to do it, but things kept getting in the way. It was one of the things I had planned for this year. I couldn’t make it happen before, but it was always in my mind. I love it.”
Her new podcast, titled “Miraji On Pod,” will feature conversations about her musical journey, with occasional appearances by other entertainers and public figures.
A Rare Female Voice in Rwandan Hip Hop
Miraji resurfaces after last releasing a song in 2019 “Hagenimana” which itself came three years after her previous active period in 2016. At that time, she said she had taken time to study how to make her music financially sustainable, as her earlier years in the industry had not been rewarding.
Shortly afterward, she announced she was leaving music again, and her presence gradually faded, leaving fans wondering about her whereabouts.
Known as one of the few women who dared to pursue Hip Hop in Rwanda, she says she drew inspiration from her love for the genre and from artists like Nicki Minaj, whom she still admires today.
Over the years, Sandra Miraji released several popular songs, including Andi Mahirwe featuring Bull Dogg, Isezerano with Butera Knowless, Byakaze, Impeta y’Urupfu with Green P, Icyemezo with P Fla and Jody, Powa Powa, and more.
