Manchester United have identified midfield reinforcements as their main priority for the 2026 summer window, with Ruben Amorim pushing for two major signings to reshape the center of his team.

The United boss is keen on adding both a deep-lying playmaker and a powerful box-to-box option, and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson has emerged as the club’s preferred target. The England international has impressed scouts with his versatility, tactical intelligence, and ability to operate either as a No.6 or in a more advanced role.

At just 23, Anderson is viewed internally as a player who fits both the club’s age profile and Amorim’s high-intensity, possession-dominant approach. Forest is expected to resist, but the growing interest from Champions League clubs means they face a major fight to keep him beyond this season.

United are also preparing a renewed push for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, having been rebuffed in late August. The 21-year-old is valued at close to £100m, but remains a long-term favourite of the recruitment department. Baleba is understood to be open to a move to Old Trafford, though Brighton will demand a premium after his rapid rise in the Premier League.

Sources say United’s willingness to “spend heavily again” reflects the looming need to refresh the squad. Casemiro’s contract is winding down and the Brazilian would need to accept a reduced deal to extend his stay. Amorim also wants more mobility and physicality in midfield areas where United have struggled in recent seasons.

The club has additionally monitored Conor Gallagher, whose situation at Atletico Madrid remains fluid. A January loan has been discussed internally, particularly with the midfielder eager to secure his place for the 2026 World Cup, but that move depends on Atletico’s stance.

After investing heavily in forwards last summer including deals for Benjamin Šeško, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha United plan to match that ambition in midfield as part of their long-term rebuild under Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s sporting leadership.

United’s horrific start to the campaign saw them slump to 14th in late September, but an unbeaten run across their last five matches has helped Amorim stabilise the side. The club now sits seventh, with Everton visiting Old Trafford next weekend.
