Ronaldo free to play in World Cup opener despite red card ban
Cristiano Ronaldo will be available for Portugal’s opening match at the 2026 World Cup after FIFA confirmed his recent red card will not result in a full suspension.
The 40-year-old forward was dismissed for elbowing Republic of Ireland defender Dara O’Shea during a qualifying defeat earlier this month. Violent conduct normally brings a three-game ban, but two of Ronaldo’s matches have been suspended for 12 months.
The governing body is understood to have taken into account his exemplary international record the incident was the first red card of his 226 cap career.
Ronaldo has already served the mandatory one-match suspension, missing Portugal’s win over Armenia on 16 November, meaning he will be eligible when the World Cup begins in the United States next summer.
In a statement, FIFA warned that any similar offence during the probation period would immediately activate the remaining ban. “The outstanding two matches will be enforced if an infringement of comparable nature and seriousness occurs,” the body said.
Ronaldo, who scored five goals during qualifying, helped Portugal top Group F and book their place at a seventh consecutive World Cup. The draw for the 48-team tournament will be shown live on the BBC on 5 December.
