Apostle Yongwe back in spotlight after offering demands video
Harerimana Joseph, known as Apostle Yongwe, has once again stirred controversy on social media after appearing in videos seemingly pressuring members of his church to give offerings.
The video was recorded in Uganda, where he has been staying and conducting his ministry after some of his activities in Rwanda were suspended, and he was later arrested for the offense of obtaining another person’s property through fraud, as defined under Article 174 of the penal code.
In an interview with a YouTube channel called Max TV, Apostle Yongwe stated that “he cannot ask for a cow because he has no cowshed, nor can he ask for grass because he is not a cow,” adding that he must therefore ask for offerings.
He went on to say that even the compilation of books known as the Bible, which most Christians follow, supports the giving of offerings. He said: “Paul said that a soldier should earn a living, no one grazes a cow and fails to milk it. When someone works for God, they are working for God.”
In the past, videos circulated on social media showing Apostle Yongwe at City Light Church calling on people facing serious personal problems to give offerings as a sign that he had solved those problems for them.
At that time, he said: “If someone has kept you waiting for a long time and you want them to finally commit, come and give an offering to confirm it… If you want your workplace to promote you, come and thank God for the promotion they will promote you, hurry up. If you have a plot of land that is still empty and you want to build on it, hurry up; what are you waiting for?”
He has also repeatedly stated that he survives on the money his followers give as offerings. At one point he openly said, “Yes, I live on offerings.”
Apostle Yongwe became known as a preacher and prophet. He is widely recognized among those who revived the prayer room in ADEPR Nyarugenge, which he once led. He is currently the leader of Horebu Church, which is heavily centered on prophecy.
