The head of the global Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV, received actors and film directors from Hollywood, United States, during a special audience at the Vatican.


Pope Leo XIV welcomed these Hollywood actors and filmmakers as part of his plan to bring the Church closer to people by meeting them where they are and engaging with their everyday lives.

The gathering also served as a strong symbol of support that Pope Leo XIV is extending to the global film industry, which he recently said worries him due to declining cinema attendance.

The Pope hosted the celebrities in the magnificent Clementine Hall, adorned with historic artwork. He praised the role of cinema in educating and inspiring audiences.

Six months after the College of Cardinals elected him the first American to become Pope many Catholics feel that Leo has yet to fully reveal his personal identity and leadership style.

His predecessor, Francis, an Argentine, was widely known for his outspoken nature and bold actions. Leo, by contrast, is more reserved.

This week, the Vatican revealed his four favorite films, including the 1960s classic The Sound of Music, It’s a Wonderful Life, and Roberto Benigni’s Oscar-winning Life is Beautiful.

Among those who attended the audience were Viggo Mortensen, Chris Pine, and film director Gus Van Sant, known for Milk and Good Will Hunting. The event also drew many Italians, including Gianni Amelio and Giuseppe Tornatore.
