Paul Kagame promotes thousands in RDF ranks
President Paul Kagame, who also serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Rwanda Defence Force, has promoted soldiers of various ranks to higher positions.
The promotions were announced by RDF leadership on the morning of Friday, 12 December 2025. Innocent Munyengango and François Regis Gatarayiha, who previously held the rank of Colonel, were elevated to Brigadier General.
Forty-three officers holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel were promoted to Colonel, while 253 Majors were elevated to Lieutenant Colonel.
A total of 79 Captains were promoted to Major, and 299 Lieutenants advanced to the rank of Captain.
Eleven soldiers moved from Staff Sergeant to Sergeant Major, and 2,296 were promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant.
Additionally, 10,260 soldiers were promoted from Corporal to Sergeant, while 7,822 Privates rose to the rank of Corporal.
