Veteran musician Ngabonziza Augustin, best known for his timeless song “Ancilla,” was laid to rest on Thursday, November 6, 2025.
The farewell began with a wake held at Mnim Kigali Tourism Hotel in Gihogwe, where family, friends, and fellow musicians gathered to honor his life and legacy. A funeral Mass was later celebrated at Gihogwe Parish, followed by his burial at Gihogwe Cemetery.
Ngabonziza rose to prominence in Rwanda’s early music scene as a member of Orchestre Les Citadins, one of the most popular bands before the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. He co-founded the group alongside his brother, Ngaboyisonga Bernard.
In 2000, he helped establish another influential band, Orchestre Irangira, in collaboration with Nikobisanzwe André Gromyko.
