M23 Rebels Capture Strategic Town of Nzibira
The M23 rebel group is confirmed to have captured the town of Nzibira following clashes with the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), according to various local reports
The town of Nzibira, located in Walungu Territory in North Kivu, was occupied on Sunday, September 21, 2025, after heavy fighting with the FARDC and the pro-government Wazalendo militia. Warplanes were used on the side of the FARDC as the reports reads.
We have learnt that Residents living near the town, in areas such as Cisaza, Cibanda, Muyange, Karhuliza and Kalongo, fled quickly to safer locations while M23 was still fighting the National army and its allied militias.
According to Radio Okapi, the UN peacekeeping mission’s radio station, fighting between M23 and FARDC was still heard on Monday morning, September 22, 2025, as the Congolese government said it had withdrawn its troops from the town to protect civilians and avoid further bloodshed.
Analysts familiar with eastern Congo point out that the town of Nzibira is highly strategic within Walungu Territory because it is rich in minerals such as cassiterite and gold, and also serves as a key route for countering other anti-government armed groups in this central african located country.
Although a peace process is being prepared and some still have hope in it, insecurity continues to prevail in eastern Congo. In recent days, FARDC has intensified its offensives against various M23 positions in Masisi and Walikale territories, pushing the situation back into crisis.
