M23 captures top FDLR fighter
The AFC/M23 rebel group, through the Deputy Governor of North Kivu Province on the M23 side, Ngarambe Manzi Willy, confirmed that they have captured one of the senior fighters in the FDLR militia group.
The fighter, known as Tokyo, was widely feared for his long history of killings targeting Congolese civilians in Masisi Territory.
Tokyo, whose real name is Yoweri and who hails from Kivuye in western Rwanda, was reportedly captured by M23 forces in the Muzimu area of Masisi.

The Deputy Governor of North Kivu Province on the M23 side, Ngarambe Manzi Willy, said: “Another notorious fighter has been captured, which is a major blow to Kinshasa. One of the top FDLR commanders, known as Tokyo (real name Yoweri, from Kivuye in western Rwanda), was captured by M23 forces in the Muzimu area of Masisi, North Kivu.”
He added that: “Tokyo was involved in horrific acts such as rape, murder, and the burning of countless [Tutsi] homes,” emphasizing that his capture represents “a significant loss for the FDLR leadership.”
On Thursday this week, M23 forces led by Colonel Nsabimana Sam presented the captured fighter to local residents.

In videos shared on social media, Masisi residents can be heard saying that Tokyo had killed many people, with some even suggesting that it would be better if he were executed.
Following Tokyo’s capture, the AFC/M23 warned the FDLR and other militias in areas under their control that they no longer stand a chance, reiterating that protecting civilians remains their top priority.
The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo has long been accused of collaborating with the FDLR a group designated as a terrorist organization but under the Rwanda–Congo agreements brokered with the involvement of the United States, both countries committed to the total eradication of the FDLR.
On Thursday this week, M23 forces led by Colonel Nsabimana Sam presented Tokyo to the public.
