Uganda: University Lecturers Die in Car Accident

Muni University in Uganda has reported the tragic deaths of three of its staff members in a serious car accident while traveling from Kampala to the Arua area.


Those who died are Rev. Canon Patrick Acema  in  charge of the University’s Advent of Christ chapel, Washington Opio  a senior sports lecturer and Kennedy Acidri their driver.

The accident occurred around 7 a.m. in the Nyapolo area of Alwi, Pakwach District. The Toyota Double Cabin vehicle they were traveling in collided with a truck operated by a Chinese company that typically handles railway roadworks.

Two other people traveling with the staff were seriously injured and are being treated at Pakwach IV Health Center. The bodies of the deceased were taken to the hospital for examination.

Muni University’s Vice Chancellor, Assoc. Prof. Simon Anguma Katrini, expressed the university’s condolences to the families of the victims, students, and staff, and confirmed that arrangements for the funerals will be announced in due course.

 He said: “We are deeply saddened. We extend our sympathies to the families, students, and staff during this difficult time.”

The accident follows warnings from Jackson Lee Atima, the Member of Parliament representing Arua Central, about the poor condition of roads in the area, urging the Ugandan government to take action.

He raised the issue during an International Tourism Day event in Arua, also appealing to Prime Minister Robina Nabajja to intervene so that the problem can be resolved sustainably.

Uganda Police, through their West Nile spokesperson SP Anguyo Jimmy Bayiga, stated that investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing. He extended condolences to the bereaved families and urged road users to exercise caution.
