How Chryso Ndasingwa Used Just Rwf 10,000 for Sharon Gatete’s Engagement
At a time when many couples spend significant amounts of money on lavish and highly planned engagement events, content creator and musician Chryso Ndasingwa has shared that he spent only Rwf 10,000 when proposing to his fiancée, Sharon Gatete.
Chryso said he initially intended to organize a grand proposal at Akagera National Park with the popular “Royal Balloon” experience. After calculating the cost, however, he abandoned the plan, realizing it would place an unnecessary financial burden on him. “My first idea was to propose at Akagera. I had already contacted them and wanted to do it in the Royal Balloon, but when I added up the expenses, it became clear that it was too costly. Even if I had found the money, it would have left me struggling. So I decided to let it go,” he recounted.
Instead, he chose a simple and intimate moment that required only Rwf 10,000. “She was at home with Pappy Israel, my colleague in music. I told her to stay put while I rushed out to buy the ring and some chocolates,” he said.
When he returned, he asked Sharon to open the gate, then invited her into Pappy’s car. After offering her a piece of candy, he gathered the courage to present the ring. “I didn’t even have my own car; we used Pappy’s. I was shaking the entire time. I took out the envelope and told her: ‘Here is the ring. I know I haven’t prepared anything big and I don’t have much right now, but I love you deeply and I thank God for you,’” he said.
Chryso prayed for her immediately after the proposal. Without a photographer and lacking funds to hire one, the couple borrowed a friend’s phone to capture photos that they later shared on social media. “As soon as I gave her the ring, she called her parents and sister to show them. After that, we borrowed an iPhone 14 Pro from our friend Isaac and took the pictures we posted online,” he said.
Sharon, who was present during the interview, recalled that after the proposal, Chryso asked what she wanted to eat. She requested a Buns sandwich. “He asked what I wanted. I said Buns, so we went to Kigali Heights and bought one,” she said.
To their surprise, the sandwich cost Rwf 9,500, meaning almost the entire engagement budget went into a single snack that the couple shared.
Sharon said the simplicity of the moment did not bother her because she was already aware of Chryso’s financial situation. “You should be friends with your partner. I wasn’t surprised at all because I know what his account balance looks like,” she joked.
Both Sharon and Chryso said they were amazed by the positive response online, as many people applauded them for choosing love and authenticity over extravagance.
