Haaland Sends Clear Title Message as Man City Cruise Past Crystal Palace
Erling Haaland once again underlined his importance to Manchester City’s title push with a ruthless double that powered Pep Guardiola’s side to a commanding 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
City arrived in south London under pressure after Arsenal’s win the previous night, but responded like champions. Calm, clinical and relentless when it mattered, Guardiola’s team reduced the gap at the top of the Premier League table to just two points with their fifth straight victory in all competitions.
Haaland set the tone late in the first half, striking with his first effort on target. Matheus Nunes delivered a pinpoint cross from the right and the Norwegian striker rose unmarked, thundering a header beyond Dean Henderson to break Palace resistance.
The hosts had started brightly and twice went close, with Adam Wharton’s defence-splitting pass releasing Yeremy Pino, who rattled the crossbar. Wharton later struck the woodwork himself, but missed chances would prove costly.
City’s quality eventually told. Shortly after the interval, Phil Foden doubled the lead following slick build-up play involving Haaland and Rayan Cherki. The French winger, quickly becoming a key creative outlet, slipped the ball into Foden’s path and the England midfielder guided a low finish into the corner.
Any lingering doubt was extinguished late on when substitute Savinho burst into the box and was tripped by Henderson. Haaland stepped up and dispatched the penalty with authority, taking his Premier League tally to 17 goals for the season and 36 in all competitions for club and country.
It was a moment of quiet revenge, too, after Henderson controversially escaped punishment in last season’s FA Cup final. This time, there was no escape.
Beyond the goals, City’s display carried an ominous warning for their rivals. Phil Foden is rediscovering his best form, Cherki is adding creativity, and Haaland remains football’s most decisive weapon. Even without hitting top gear early on, City always look capable of overwhelming opponents.
For Palace, bright spells and early promise went unrewarded. Against elite opposition, missed chances are punished and City did exactly that.
As the title race intensifies, one truth is becoming clearer by the week: when Manchester City has Erling Haaland firing, they set the standard everyone else must chase.
