Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães is facing a race against time to be fit for Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Crystal Palace after sustaining a thigh injury in the midweek Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid.

The Brazilian centre-back, who scored and assisted in the 4–0 win, was forced off in the second half and has not trained fully since. His absence would be a significant blow to Mikel Arteta’s side as they chase a seventh straight victory in all competitions and aim to preserve one of Europe’s meanest defences.

“Big Gabi had to leave the pitch with an issue, and he hasn’t been able to train yet,” Arteta confirmed on Friday. “Let’s see how he evolves in the next 24 hours whether he’s available or not for the weekend.”

Arsenal have conceded just three goals in eight Premier League matches, a record that has drawn comparisons to Chelsea’s title-winning side of 2004–05, who famously allowed only 15 all season. The Gunners’ defensive solidity has been central to their unbeaten start, with Gabriel forming a formidable partnership alongside William Saliba.

Arteta, reflecting on the team’s progress, admitted that maintaining defensive consistency is key to mounting a serious title challenge. “History shows that teams with the best defensive record normally win the league,” he said. “The stronger we are in that foundation, the better our chances to win games.”

The Arsenal boss, however, urged caution amid growing excitement around their numbers. “It’s only the start of the season,” he said. “We’re doing well, but we must keep improving. Football is unpredictable too many ‘ifs’ can distract you from what’s important.”

With Gabriel’s fitness under scrutiny and an intense run of fixtures ahead, Arsenal will hope their defensive cornerstone is cleared to play. Otherwise, Arteta may be forced to turn to Jakub Kiwior or Ben White to fill the void in the heart of defence.
