For over three decades, Gratien Niyitegeka, affectionately known as Papa Sava, has been a defining presence in Rwanda’s entertainment landscape. His characters from Seburikoko to Sekaganda and Ngiga have left an indelible mark on Rwandan comedy and acting, shaping the way stories are told and experienced across the nation.
This year, Gratien celebrates 30 years in the arts, a journey marked by creativity, resilience, and a deep connection with his audience. Over the years, he has captivated fans on social media, television, radio, and digital platforms, becoming one of Rwanda’s most influential and beloved entertainers.
Reflecting on his career, Gratien shared with InyaRwanda: “Thirty years in the arts is a long journey. Rwanda’s cinema is still growing, but these years have taught me consistency, adaptability, and how to stay true to my craft.”
Born on November 25, 1978, in the hills of Kiyanza (today Ntarabana Sector, Rulindo District), Gratien discovered his talent early. Performing at weddings, school events, and church gatherings, he developed a natural flair for comedy and storytelling a skill that would define his career.
After years of success with series productions, Gratien has finally fulfilled a long-standing request from fans: a full-length feature film. Titled “What a Day”, the movie is a landmark project that represents both artistic growth and audience engagement. “Fans have long wanted a full movie, rather than just series episodes. Now, with the right equipment, crew, and resources, I could make it happen,”
he explained.
Produced with a budget between 10 and 20 million Rwandan francs, the film is currently in post-production, with final touches being applied to audio and visuals. Gratien emphasized that it will not premiere on YouTube, but will first be showcased to select audiences and later broadcast on Zacu TV in January 2026.
The production, supported by Zacu Entertainment, features a mix of professional and supporting actors. Key roles include Uwabeza Leocadie and Kayirangwa Alice, while dozens of extras add life and authenticity to the story. “Filming took nine days. The collaboration brought together talent and experience that truly bring the story to life,”
Gratien noted.
“What a Day” goes beyond comedy, weaving emotional narratives with moments of laughter, struggle, and resilience. The film explores real-life experiences, offering audiences both entertainment and meaningful reflection. It represents Gratien’s dedication to blending humor, music, cinema, and cultural storytelling. “It’s not just a film it’s a reflection of life, growth, and the challenges we all face. It is my way of giving back to the fans who have supported me for decades,”
he added.
From his early performances in the 1990s to becoming a national icon, Gratien has evolved into a pillar of Rwandan arts. His work has influenced generations of creators, preserved cultural narratives, and strengthened the local entertainment industry.
With “What a Day,” Papa Sava not only celebrates 30 years of creativity but also establishes a new benchmark for Rwandan cinema, showing that local talent can deliver quality productions that resonate with audiences at home and potentially abroad.
