Newcastle United reignited their European campaign with a convincing 2–0 victory over Athletic Bilbao at St James’ Park, extending their Champions League winning run to three matches.

Towering defender Dan Burn opened the scoring with a superb header, before Joelinton sealed the result early in the second half as the Magpies continued their impressive home form in Europe.

Eddie Howe’s side entered the contest under pressure following a disappointing 3–1 Premier League defeat to West Ham last weekend. But Newcastle responded in style, showing composure and purpose in front of a vibrant Tyneside crowd.

The result not only keeps their continental momentum intact but also marks a fifth straight home victory in all competitions a timely confidence boost ahead of a return to domestic action.

Newcastle wasted little time asserting control. In the 11th minute, Kieran Trippier’s expertly delivered free-kick found Burn, who powered a header beyond Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simón and into the far corner.

The goal, reminiscent of Burn’s strike in last season’s League Cup final, electrified the home support and settled any lingering nerves after Sunday’s setback.

Bilbao, to their credit, fought back with determination. Unai Gómez struck the post after slipping behind the Newcastle defence, and moments later Adama Boiro unleashed a fierce drive that cannoned off the woodwork.

Newcastle appeared vulnerable, struggling to maintain possession under Bilbao’s press. However, goalkeeper Nick Pope remained alert, ensuring the visitors’ pressure went unrewarded.

Any hopes of a Bilbao comeback faded shortly after the restart. In the 49th minute, Harvey Barnes skipped past his marker on the left and whipped a perfect cross into the box for Joelinton, who rose highest to head home his first goal in nine games.

The Brazilian’s emotional celebration reflected the relief of a player rediscovering form after a difficult spell.

The one concern for Newcastle came late in the first half when Anthony Gordon was forced off with a recurring hip issue. Howe later confirmed the winger would be assessed ahead of Sunday’s trip to Brentford.

Despite the setback, the Magpies maintained control for the remainder of the match, closing out a result that rarely looked in doubt.

Speaking after the match, manager Eddie Howe praised his players’ response to recent criticism. “It was important to show character after West Ham,” he said. “We weren’t at our absolute best, but the intensity and focus were there. It’s another positive step in Europe.”

Howe also highlighted Burn’s leadership and commitment, adding, “Dan’s goal was special a product of hard work on the training ground.”

The win leaves Newcastle with nine points from four matches, trailing only Barcelona in their Champions League league phase group.

Newcastle now faces back-to-back away trips visiting Marseille and Bayer Leverkusen in their final group fixtures. Domestically, Howe’s men turn their attention to a crucial Premier League clash against Brentford this Sunday.
