Liverpool Poised for January Move as Palace Expect Only One Bid for Guehi
Liverpool appear to be in pole position to secure the signing of Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi in January, with club insiders at Selhurst Park convinced the Reds are the only side preparing a concrete offer in the upcoming transfer window.
The 25-year-old centre-back was close to joining Liverpool on deadline day last summer before negotiations collapsed in the final stages. Despite that disappointment, Liverpool have maintained long-term interest in the England international, who enters the final 18 months of his contract in 2026.
Sources in London indicate that several top European clubs are monitoring Guehi, but most are expected to delay any formal approach until the summer when the defender could be available on a free transfer.
That stance gives Liverpool a clear advantage. Palace, who risked losing their captain for nothing next year, are believed to prefer cashing in during January if a serious offer arrives.
Liverpool’s defensive depth has been severely tested this season following a long-term ACL injury to young summer signing Giovanni Leoni, leaving Arne Slot short of options as the champions pursue another Premier League title.
Club officials are keen to reinforce early in the winter window to prevent the squad’s defensive shortage from becoming a larger problem in the second half of the campaign.
Alongside the Guehi pursuit, Liverpool are also monitoring Antoine Semenyo, whose release clause understood to be around £65 million becomes active in the first two weeks of January.
The Bournemouth forward has been one of the Premier League’s standout performers this season, earning comparisons to Gareth Bale for his explosive style. Former England striker Darren Bent has publicly urged Liverpool to make the move, describing Semenyo as “unstoppable” and capable of improving any top club.
With the champions already having spent heavily in the summer, Liverpool’s recruitment team faces strategic decisions in January, balancing long-term planning with the immediate push for trophies.
For now, the path toward signing Marc Guehi appears clearer than ever and Liverpool may not get a better chance to land one of the Premier League’s most consistent defenders.
