Arsenal have suffered a major blow ahead of a crucial run of fixtures after Mikel Arteta confirmed that Gabriel Magalhaes will be out for several weeks with a thigh injury picked up while on international duty with Brazil.

The centre-back returned to London earlier this week for further assessment, and Arteta revealed on Friday that the club is awaiting a follow-up scan to determine a precise timeline. While no exact return date has been set, the Arsenal boss admitted the issue is “significant enough” to rule Gabriel out of multiple matches.

“Unfortunately, Gabi has a muscular injury and he’ll be out for a few weeks,” Arteta said. “We’ll have more clarity after the next scan, but it’s a setback for us at an important moment.”

The injury comes at a difficult time for the Premier League leaders, who face a gruelling stretch that includes the North London Derby, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Brentford and Aston Villa within a packed four-week period.

Gabriel has been indispensable in Arsenal’s back line this season, forming the core of a defence that has conceded fewer goals than any side in Europe’s top five leagues. He has also contributed in the final third, scoring twice and registering three assists across all competitions.

“He’s been a leader for us, on and off the pitch,” Arteta said. “Losing someone with that presence is never good, but we’ll adapt. We have players who can step up.”

Arteta also revealed that Riccardo Calafiori remains a doubt for Sunday’s derby after missing Italy’s fixtures during the international break due to ongoing fitness problems. The defender hasn’t trained this week, and his availability will depend on how he responds in Saturday’s session.

If Calafiori fails to recover, Arsenal could be forced into a reshuffle on the left side, with Cristhian Mosquera, Piero Hincapié, or academy graduate Myles Lewis-Skelly among the alternatives.

The Gunners’ medical room is becoming increasingly crowded. Martin Ødegaard, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli, Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyökeres are all undergoing individual recovery programs after missing international duty.

“We’ve pushed hard to get as many of them back as possible,” Arteta added. “Some are close, but we need to be smart. It’s a long season.”

Arsenal sit four points clear of Manchester City but dropped points in a dramatic 2–2 draw at Sunderland before the break. With several frontline players unavailable and a difficult schedule looming, Arteta knows maintaining their lead will require a collective effort.

“We’ve handled challenges all season,” he insisted. “This is another one and we have to respond.” Arteta said.
