Foden and Haaland Shine as Manchester City Cruise Past Dortmund
Manchester City strengthened their grip on a Champions League last-16 place after a commanding 4–1 victory over Borussia Dortmund, with Phil Foden scoring twice and Erling Haaland netting against his former club.
The result keeps Pep Guardiola’s side unbeaten in the league phase and underlines their growing momentum after a slow start to the season. Phil Foden scores two fine goals, one in each half. Erling Haaland continues prolific form with 27th goal of the campaign. Waldemar Anton grabs a consolation for Dortmund. Rayan Cherki adds City’s fourth in stoppage time
It was a lively start from Dortmund, but once City found their rhythm, the gulf in class became clear. After testing goalkeeper Gregor Kobel twice from distance, Phil Foden finally broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute a precise low finish into the corner after finding space on the edge of the box.
Seven minutes later, Erling Haaland doubled the lead, slamming home Jeremy Doku’s cross to make it 2–0 and continue his remarkable scoring streak in Europe. Kobel was kept busy throughout the first half, denying Nico O’Reilly and Tijjani Reijnders, as Dortmund struggled to contain City’s relentless movement.
City remained in control after the break, and Foden added a superb second just before the hour mark curling a left-footed shot beyond Kobel to cap one of his finest European displays.
Dortmund briefly threatened a comeback when Waldemar Anton bundled in from close range in the 72nd minute after Julian Ryerson’s delivery, but substitute Rayan Cherki restored City’s three-goal cushion with a composed finish in stoppage time.
After an inconsistent start to the campaign, City look to have rediscovered their rhythm and Foden’s influence is growing by the week. The England midfielder’s brace showcased both his technical precision and confidence, making a strong case for his international recall ahead of next month’s fixtures.
Haaland, meanwhile, continues to make scoring look routine. His strike against Dortmund means he has now scored in five consecutive Champions League matches for three different clubs RB Salzburg, Dortmund, and City.
For Borussia Dortmund, the result was a harsh reality check. Despite bright spells, they were overpowered in midfield and exposed defensively. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel prevented an even heavier defeat with eight saves.
Manchester City return to Premier League action on Sunday, 9 November, hosting champions Liverpool in what could be a defining clash in the title race.
They then face Bayer Leverkusen at the Etihad on 25 November in the next round of Champions League fixtures.
Dortmund, meanwhile, travel to Hamburg this weekend before welcoming Villarreal in Europe later this month.
