Burikantu Honors His Mother’s Legacy by Supporting Families in Bugesera
Rwandan actor and filmmaker Mwitende Abdoulkarim, better known by his stage name Burikantu, has touched hearts once again after offering to pay community health insurance (Mutuelle de Santé) for three vulnerable families totaling 26 members in Bugesera District.
Burikantu, a familiar face from popular Rwandan films like Indoto and several YouTube productions, said his passion for helping others stems from the values he learned growing up especially from his mother, who once served as a village leader. Watching her serve the community, he said, helped him understand the challenges that ordinary people face daily.
Recently, the actor joined other participants of the Mashariki African Film Festival in a community outreach program held in Kamabuye Village, Rilima Sector. The activity, which also involved local leaders, students, and environmental groups, focused on preparing land for tree planting and raising awareness about climate action ahead of Rwanda’s national tree-planting campaign launch.
Speaking after the event, Burikantu explained that his contribution was not planned but was a spontaneous act of kindness inspired by the moment. “When I arrived here, I didn’t just want to participate in the festival’s community work I wanted to make a difference. My mother used to lead a village, so I know the kind of problems people face: children lacking hygiene materials, families without medical insurance. I felt compelled to do something small that could mean a lot,” he said.
The gesture turned out to have a larger impact than expected.“I thought I was helping just a few people,” he added with a smile, “but when I saw the list, it was 26 people in total! Still, I’m grateful that God has given me enough to share.”
One of the families that benefited from the donation said Burikantu’s help came at the right time.“I’ve struggled for years to afford Mutuelle de Santé for my family,” said one mother emotionally. “What he did is beyond generosity may God bless him abundantly.”
Habimana Faustin, the Kamabuye Village Leader, applauded the initiative, calling it “an act of solidarity that reflects true leadership and empathy.” He confirmed that Burikantu’s contribution covered health insurance for all 26 individuals, amounting to about 78,000 Rwandan Francs, benefiting households already identified as vulnerable in government support programs.
Burikantu’s kind act has since gone viral on social media, earning admiration from fans and community members who view him as a role model for using fame in a meaningful way.
Through this initiative, Burikantu not only continued his mother’s legacy of service but also reminded the public that real influence lies in compassion proving that small gestures of kindness can bring great hope to those who need it most.
