The United Nations has announced that Bintou Keita, who served as the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the head of MONUSCO, is set to conclude her duties and immediately go into retirement.

Information from some UN staff confirms that Bintou Keita has already submitted her departure details as she steps down from her position, at a time when MONUSCO continues its drawdown in the country and transfers security responsibilities to the DRC.

Bintou Keita had led MONUSCO since 2021, a period marked by intense conflict in eastern Congo and the rise of armed groups. Although no specific reasons have been given for her resignation, UN officials say it was a personal decision.

MONUSCO stated that operations will continue as usual while the search for her replacement begins. For now, some of the mission’s senior officials will continue to lead its activities on an interim basis.

Her resignation comes as the DRC continues to demand MONUSCO's rapid withdrawal, arguing that the mission is no longer needed and that its time in the country has come to an end. The UN says it is working with the Congolese government on a smooth and secure drawdown process that does not compromise the safety of civilians.

This marks a new chapter toward significant changes in the relationship between Congo and the UN, particularly in the areas of security and peace in the eastern part of the country.
