Fighting erupts between M23 rebels and Wazalendo in North Kivu
Fresh fighting has erupted between the M23 rebel group and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), backed by allied militias including Wazalendo and the FDLR, in North Kivu’s Masisi Territory.
The clashes took place in Masisi Territory, North Kivu Province, where the M23 part of the AFC coalition has seized control of large areas after capturing the provincial capital of North Kivu.
The most affected areas were in Nyamaboko locality, within the Osso-Banyungu groupement, forcing many residents to flee for safety.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday morning, calm had returned to the town of Mwesso after a night of heavy gunfire that had terrified residents, according to Radio Okapi.

Reports indicate that AFC/M23 fighters fired shots into the air after learning of the death of one of their senior commanders, who was killed in an ambush by Wazalendo forces on the Mokoto-Kibarizo road.
All this is happening as peace talks between the Congolese government and the M23 continue in Doha, Qatar though no formal agreement has yet been signed or implemented.
