Liverpool boss Arne Slot has clarified his controversial comments on Ruben Amorim’s tactics, insisting his remarks after defeat to Manchester United were misunderstood.

After facing criticism last weekend, Slot sought to end the debate by explaining that his post-match words were intended as praise for Amorim’s tactical discipline rather than a dig at Manchester United’s style of play.

United had ended a nine-year wait for victory at Anfield with a 2–1 win, relying on a compact shape and direct counterattacks.

Speaking to TNT Sports ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Brentford, Slot said his previous remarks were “meant as a compliment.” He noted that United “had their game plan very well in order” and that his comments about long balls and a low defensive block were taken out of context.

The Dutchman went on to explain that Liverpool’s early concession Bryan Mbeumo scoring within the first minute forced his side into a difficult position. “When you go one down so early, every second ball becomes a battle,” Slot said. “I was simply describing why the match was difficult for us.”

Slot also pointed out that Liverpool still created chances against United and in the 5–1 Champions League win over Eintracht Frankfurt. “It was a very smart game plan,” he admitted. “We produced more chances than usual against a team defending with a 5-4-1.”

Liverpool will look to avoid a fourth straight Premier League defeat when they visit Brentford this Saturday. Victory could move them within a point of leaders Arsenal, who host Crystal Palace on Sunday. Manchester United, meanwhile, seek a third consecutive league win when they welcome Brighton to Old Trafford.

The episode highlights Slot’s growing adjustment to English football’s intense scrutiny every post-match comment magnified. But with results beginning to stabilize in Europe, the Dutchman knows only consistent domestic form will ease the pressure fully.
