Erling Haaland Leads Tributes as Scott Carson Announces Retirement
Erling Haaland has paid a heartfelt tribute to former Manchester City goalkeeper Scott Carson after the veteran shot-stopper announced his retirement from football at the age of 40.
Carson confirmed his decision on Thursday via Instagram, bringing an end to a remarkable 21-year professional career that began at Leeds United in 2004 and included spells at Liverpool, Aston Villa, Derby County, and Manchester City.
“After an incredible journey between the posts, it’s time to hang up the gloves,” Carson wrote. “Football has given me everything memories, friendships, and moments I’ll never forget. Thank you to every teammate, coach, fan, and club that’s been part of my ride.”
Despite making just two senior appearances during his six years at City, Carson was a key figure in the dressing room and played an important role during the club’s historic 2023 treble-winning season. Manager Pep Guardiola has often praised the goalkeeper’s influence off the pitch, describing him as “fundamental in the locker room” and “a leader people listen to.”
Haaland, who played alongside Carson for three years, was among the first to respond. “Miss you pal, all the best,” the Norwegian striker wrote under the retirement post. Jack Grealish, Kyle Walker, and several of Carson’s other former teammates also shared messages of appreciation, calling him a “legend” and “the perfect teammate.”
Over his long career, Carson lifted 11 trophies with Manchester City and earned four England caps, representing the national team between 2007 and 2011. His son, Hayden Carson, 19, is currently on the books at Wolves and on loan at Chester FC.
As City prepares to face Aston Villa this weekend, Guardiola is expected to pay public tribute to a player whose leadership and professionalism made him one of the most respected figures in the Premier League.
