Jamie Carragher has accused Gary Neville of “killing” Scott McTominay’s Manchester United career with years of harsh criticism, after the Scottish midfielder transformed his fortunes following a stunning spell at Napoli.

McTominay, who made 255 appearances for Manchester United before his surprise move to Italy, has flourished since joining Napoli. The 28-year-old has scored 18 goals in 53 matches across all competitions and helped Antonio Conte’s side win the Serie A title in his debut season, later being named the league’s Best Player.

Speaking on The Overlap, Neville questioned whether United made a huge mistake letting McTominay leave, asking: “What’s happened to Scott McTominay? Have we made a massive mistake?”

Carragher immediately responded with a sharp rebuke, saying Neville’s constant negativity had contributed to the midfielder’s departure. “You’ve killed another Man United player, that’s what happened,” he said. “Too much criticism, saying he’s not good enough.”

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright echoed Carragher’s view, reminding Neville that he once insisted the club “had to get rid of him.” Wright added: “Poor Scott. He just wanted some freedom.”

Neville defended himself, insisting he never believed McTominay should have been sold and only argued that he was best suited as a squad player. However, earlier comments suggest otherwise. Back in 2018, Neville openly questioned McTominay’s technical ability in midfield and even claimed the Scotsman might be better suited to playing centre-back.

Despite the past criticism, McTominay’s career has skyrocketed in Italy. Napoli currently sit second in Serie A level on points with leaders AC Milan putting him in contention for a second consecutive league title.

McTominay has also been linked with a return to the Premier League, with Everton among the clubs monitoring his situation. His contract with Napoli runs until 2028, ensuring any future move would require a significant offer.

As McTominay’s resurgence continues, debate grows over whether Manchester United misjudged his potential or whether criticisms from influential voices like Neville played a role in his exit.
