In a statement issued on Tuesday, the AFC/M23 group declared that the current situation unfolding across the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is concrete evidence of the collapse of state authority and the failure of government institutions.

AFC/M23 says the killings and rebellion taking place in Kwango carried out by the Mobondo militia, the widespread looting and insecurity in Kinshasa, as well as the chaos in Haut-Katanga, all demonstrate that the Kinshasa government no longer has control of the country.

The group also emphasizes what it calls discrimination against Kinyarwanda- and Swahili-speaking communities, which it claims continues to be practiced by the Kinshasa authorities, raising serious concerns regarding national unity and cooperation.

AFC/M23 announced that from today, its objective is to restore legitimate governance across every part of Congo, return authority to the State, and put an end to disorder and the persecution of civilians.

The statement comes as fighting intensifies in parts of South Kivu, where AFC/M23 has already seized several areas and is now advancing towards the major city of Uvira.
