AFC/M23 advances in Eastern DRC
Fresh reports from Sange, in the Rusizi Valley more than 30 kilometres from the city of Uvira confirm that heavy gunfire continued to be heard on Sunday evening, December 7, 2025.
The situation has thrown residents into panic, as the main cause of the intense shooting remains unclear.
Locals say the gunfire began in the evening and continued unusually, with some claiming it was fighting between FARDC soldiers themselves, while others believe AFC/M23 fighters may already have entered the area.
The incident comes as AFC/M23 continues to expand its positions, having captured the town of Lubirizi on Sunday afternoon. This followed Saturday’s takeover of Bwegera, Mutarure and Luvungi areas that were considered key FARDC surveillance points.
Although the FARDC military command announced it was still present in Lubirizi, it confirmed withdrawing from Luvungi “to protect civilian lives.”
Other reports indicate that the gunfire heard in Sange is the result of internal clashes between FARDC troops themselves, following the recent loss of large territories, which has reportedly triggered fighting among soldiers.
Residents say they are deeply worried about their safety, especially as the clashes are approaching densely populated areas, raising fears that the situation could deteriorate further if peace efforts are not pursued.
