Tshisekedi fires three top Generals
The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Antoine Tshisekedi, is reported to have permanently dismissed three senior military officers holding the rank of general from the national army (FARDC).
Those confirmed to have been dismissed:
- Gen. Christian Tshiwewe Songesa, former Chief of Staff of the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC)
- Lt. Gen. Franck Ntumba, former Head of Military Affairs at the Presidency
- Brig. Gen. Katende Batubadila Benjamin, former Deputy Commander of the Presidential Guard Unit
Since August 2025, these three generals have been in detention, accused of plotting to overthrow President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi’s government.
The Presidential Guard Command recently withdrew their personal security teams and handed them over to FARDC headquarters, following allegations that they were linked to a group planning a coup against the current regime.
Reports further indicate that the men could soon be brought before a military court to face trial on the charges against them, and if convicted, they could face the death penalty.
President Tshisekedi is said to be engaged in an intense internal purge, aiming to eliminate individuals particularly within the military who might threaten his leadership, with a growing number of officers being arrested or expelled from the army.
