The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has called for a thorough investigation into what happened to him during the 80th United Nations General Assembly on September 24, 2025.

President Donald Trump, known for speaking his mind, announced this on his Truth Social account on X, criticizing how he was treated both on his way to deliver his speech with his wife Melania Trump and during the speech itself.

What Donald Trump says went wrong

  • When Trump and his wife Melania were using the moving stairs known as an ‘Escalator,’ it stopped abruptly.
  • While delivering his speech to the assembly, the teleprompter malfunctioned in an unclear way.
  • In the conference room, there were also sound (audio) problems.

Because of these incidents, Trump is calling for a thorough investigation to what happened, which led him to write a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres asking for an inquiry into everything he highlighted.

Expressing his dissatisfaction, Donald Trump wrote: “The sabotage at the United Nations did not happen once or twice, but three times  a very disgraceful thing!”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that someone had stopped the escalator as the couple was about to step on it, while UN officials said the person filming the event might have acted unexpectedly, causing the teleprompter to go off.

“The United States of America will not tolerate attacks aimed at undermining our security in international forums. We expect swift cooperation and decisive measures to be taken,” the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations wrote on his X account.

This year’s UN General Assembly has seen other controversial incidents. For instance, the President of South Africa’s microphone was cut off when he addressed the issue of Israel and Palestine.

Similarly, the President of France was filmed being blocked on the street in the U.S. and was forced to personally call Donald Trump to get permission to pass when Trump was also moving through the area.
