The two senior officers of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) arrived in Uvira on October 22, 2025, crossing through the Kavimvira border post.
Brig. Gen. Ilunga Kabamba Jean-Jacques was deployed to the city as the commander of the 33rd Military Region, while his colleague was assigned to lead the “Operation Sokola 2” mission in South Kivu.

Kabamba was appointed to this position following the death of Brig. Gen. Mwaku Mbuluku Jean-Daniel, who passed away in August, while Brig. Gen. Amuli replaced Mwehu Lumbu Evariste, who had been assigned to the role after Brig. Gen. Olivier Gasita was dismissed from the city.
Gasita, an officer of Banyamulenge origin, was removed from Uvira following protests that resulted in deaths. He was accused of collaborating with M23. To this day, the Congolese authorities insist that they do not want the city of Uvira to fall into the hands of M23.

At present, FARDC has deployed a large number of troops in the city, including Burundian soldiers, while fighters from the AFC/M23 have claimed that they could seize control of the city at any moment. The situation remains chaotic, with clashes continuing between FARDC forces and Wazalendo militiamen.
Meanwhile, the Twangiza Mining Company, which processes gold, was once again attacked on Thursday at 1:12 a.m. by a military aircraft belonging to the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC). The airstrike reportedly targeted fuel depots and power generators, after previously destroying Aggreko containers that had been providing electricity at the site.
