Burundi: 25 Students from Green Hills Arrested
25 students from Green Hills International College in Gitega Province, Burundi, have been arrested by security forces following violent riots that broke out on October 22, 2025, causing extensive damage to school property.
At around 8 p.m., some students began a large-scale protest, destroying video cameras and televisions, and even attempting to set fire to the school offices using gasoline that had been brought in through unknown means.

Footage from the scene shows students wearing face masks, apparently to conceal their identities.
Sources within the school say the unrest was sparked by the administration’s decision to expel several students who had been caught with marijuana, as well as others accused of damaging security cameras.
Nestor Hakizimana, the school’s Head of Discipline and Accommodation, said, “Some students were caught with drugs, and while some were expelled, others have continued to cause trouble.”

He added that the gasoline and drugs used during the protest may have been smuggled in by the students themselves, visitors, or even some school staff some of whom have already been dismissed.
Hakizimana further stated that “those proven innocent will be reinstated,” but stressed that those found guilty will face serious disciplinary measures to serve as an example to others.
The school administration is urging parents and educators to join efforts in combating drug use among youth, while investigations continue to determine each person’s involvement in the incident.
