Priests Protest Across Italy in Support of Palestine
In Italy, there was a demonstration by a group calling themselves “Priests Against Genocide,” held to show support for Palestine while life continues to deteriorate due to Israeli attacks.
Protest involved 1,200 priests from 34 countries around the world and coincided with other demonstrations in various parts of the country including Genoa, Livorno, Bologna and Milan all aimed at condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza, which continue to cause crises, deaths, and severe hunger.
The protests disturbed schools, train services, ports, and public transportation across Italy. Delays were reported in major cities, including Rome while in cities such as Genoa and Livorno; commercial activities came to a standstill.
In Milan, located in northern Italy, clashes broke out when demonstrators forced their way into a train station, while in Bologna police used water cannons to disperse protesters who had blocked a major road, halting the movement of people and goods.
The demonstrators accused Italy and the European Union of “inaction” as pressure mounts on Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government over its stance on the conflict.
Globally, pressure on the Israeli government continues to rise as more countries recognize Palestine as a state, despite Israel’s Prime Minister repeatedly stating that a two-state solution "meaning independent states of Israel and Palestine " will never be possible. So far, 147 of the 193 United Nations member states have officially recognized Palestine as a state.
Major countries that have recognized Palestine : Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and Spain.
Italy is one of the countries that has not yet recognized Palestine as an independent state, though it is expected to do so in the near future following United Kingdom and France. Other well-known countries that have not yet recognized Palestine include Germany, Japan, South Korea, and the United States key ally of Israel.
