President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni met with the Paramount Chief of the Lango sub-region (Won Nyaci), Eng. Dr. Moses Odongo Okune, along with other local leaders, to discuss various topics including cultural practices, land management, education, and wealth creation.

During the meeting held in Lango, Museveni called for a review of certain traditions and cultural practices, while urging that others be preserved because they are considered vital to the community’s heritage. He particularly noted that customs such as isolating young women or denying them control over their lives should be re-examined, whereas the cultural taboo against marrying within one’s clan should be maintained.

“We discussed many issues and agreed that some customs should be revised while others should be upheld or improved. For example, the tradition of making women dependent or treating girls as subordinates throughout their lives should be re-evaluated, while maintaining the restriction against marrying within the same clan remains a good practice,” Museveni said.

President Museveni also urged local leaders to properly manage their land by establishing boundaries, practicing irrigation farming, using fertilizers, promoting education, and preserving their native language.

Museveni stated: “I also asked them to demarcate their land, consider irrigation-based agriculture, use fertilizers, improve education, and take the lead in protecting their local language.”

He further emphasized the importance of educating citizens on “entrepreneurship through training and setting a good example,” as well as “maintaining peace and resisting those who seek to disrupt it.”

Museveni also addressed the need to “return administrative functions to cultural institutions” and to “fight against land fragmentation,” urging local leaders to take these matters seriously.

The meeting came just days after President Museveni’s visit to the Lango sub-region as part of his political outreach tour ahead of the 2026 elections.

Analysts say the engagement with cultural leaders aimed to strengthen the ruling NRM’s presence in the region and to highlight the President’s development and peace agenda.
