Liverpool boss Arne Slot has urged his players to give everything when they face Galatasaray in Istanbul on Tuesday, match day two of the Champions League group stage.

The Reds opened their European campaign with a thrilling 3-2 win over Atletico Madrid but suffered a 2-1 Premier League defeat to Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Slot warned that despite Galatasaray’s heavy 5-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt on opening day, the Turkish champions remain a serious challenge.

“If you want to compete for trophies, and if you wear a Liverpool shirt, you must give everything and play your best football,” Slot said at a Monday press conference.

He praised Galatasaray’s manager and their experience, adding that the Frankfurt defeat might reflect either the quality of Frankfurt or a bit of bad luck for the hosts.

Assistant coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst will play a key role in preparing Liverpool, bringing knowledge of Turkish football from his time coaching Besiktas in 2024.

Slot also stressed the importance of set pieces at this level, referencing Virgil van Dijk’s late winner against Atletico, which came from such a situation.

Liverpool have invested nearly £450 million in transforming their squad this summer, bringing in forwards Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, though Mohamed Salah remains their key performer.

The Reds will be looking to build on their Champions League momentum and demonstrate that their squad overhaul can still deliver European success.

Liverpool have won the Champions League six times, but the club’s modern-era rebuild under Slot aims to add a seventh. A strong showing in Istanbul could signal that the Dutch coach is shaping a new European powerhouse.
