Will He Stand Alone Atop Football’s Record Books?
Cristiano Ronaldo is closing in on becoming the first player in history to score 1,000 official goals, sitting just 54 strikes short of the landmark.
Now 40 and still leading the line for Al-Nassr, the Portuguese forward has amassed 946 goals in competitive matches for club and country. His tally includes prolific spells at Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and, most recently, in Saudi Arabia.
Ronaldo has maintained a remarkable scoring rate in his later years, averaging a goal every 98 minutes since joining Al-Nassr. Based on that pace, he could hit the 1,000-goal mark in fewer than 60 games.
Only Josef Bican (950) and Erwin Helmchen (989) sit ahead of him on the all-time list compiled by the Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation (RSSSF). Ronaldo is expected to surpass both in the coming months.
“I’ve already reached 900 goals. My challenge now is 1,000,” Ronaldo said last year. “If I don’t have injuries, I want that record.”
The pursuit places him above rivals Lionel Messi (884), Robert Lewandowski (733), and the late Pelé (778 official goals), cementing his reputation as football’s most relentless finisher.
His goalscoring journey began in Portugal but peaked in Spain, where he netted 450 times for Real Madrid, becoming the club’s all-time top scorer. He also added 145 for Manchester United across two spells and 101 for Juventus.
On the international stage, Ronaldo has scored more than 130 goals for Portugal, leading them to the 2016 European Championship and the 2019 Nations League titles.
Debates continue about historical tallies, with legends like Pelé and Romário claiming over 1,000 strikes including friendlies. Yet Ronaldo’s record is distinguished by verifiable video evidence of each goal.
If he reaches 1,000, Ronaldo will stand alone atop football’s record books, a fitting milestone for a career built on longevity, consistency, and an insatiable hunger for goals.
Meanwhile, Lionel Messi remains his closest modern rival. The Argentine has 884 official goals and continues to add to his tally at Inter Miami, where his playmaking and finishing keep him in the conversation. While Ronaldo chases the unprecedented 1,000 mark, Messi’s quest for 900—and possibly beyond—ensures the greatest rivalry in football history still has another chapter to write.
