Max Dowman Makes Champions League History as Arsenal’s 15-Year-Old Debutant
Arsenal teenager Max Dowman became the youngest player ever to feature in the UEFA Champions League after coming off the bench during the Gunners’ 3–0 victory away to Slavia Prague on Tuesday night.
The 15-year-old midfielder replaced Leandro Trossard in the 73rd minute, setting a new competition record that had previously been held by Germany’s Youssoufa Moukoko, who debuted for Borussia Dortmund at 16 years and 18 days. Dowman does not turn 16 until December 31.
Manager Mikel Arteta opted to hand the teenager his debut with Arsenal comfortably in control of the match. Goals from Bukayo Saka and Mikel Merino who struck twice had given the visitors a commanding lead before Dowman’s introduction.
Despite fielding a depleted squad due to injuries to Viktor Gyökeres, Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, Martin Ødegaard, and Noni Madueke, Arsenal maintained full control throughout the contest, securing their third straight Champions League win of the campaign.
Dowman has enjoyed a rapid rise through Arsenal’s academy ranks this season. Having impressed in the Premier League 2 and UEFA Youth League, he was recently promoted to first-team training and made his Premier League debut earlier this year.
The teenager’s inclusion highlights Arsenal’s continued faith in youth under Arteta, who also handed a late appearance to Andre Harriman-Annous, another academy product who starred in last week’s Carabao Cup victory over Brighton.
Arteta praised his young players’ attitude and composure after the final whistle. “For Max and Andre, it’s a special moment. They’ve worked hard for this opportunity, and tonight they showed they belong at this level,” he said.
Dowman’s milestone adds another chapter to Arsenal’s history of promoting homegrown talent, following in the footsteps of Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, and Ethan Nwaneri, who himself broke a Premier League age record in 2022.
Arsenal’s victory in Prague keeps them top of Group D and on course for early qualification to the Champions League knockout stages. Their next European fixture will see them host Olympiacos at the Emirates Stadium later this month.
Dowman’s record-breaking debut will now stand as one of the defining moments of the 2025/26 group stage a reminder of how quickly Arsenal’s next generation is making its mark on the biggest stage in European football.
