DR Congo Army arrests Lt Gen Pacifique Masunzu

The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) have arrested Lt Gen Pacifique Masunzu, the commander of the army’s Third Military Region.


Reports confirm that he was immediately transferred to the capital, Kinshasa, to face investigation and prosecution for the charges against him. He was reportedly arrested in the city of Kisangani, in Tshopo Province.

Last month, when the AFC/M23 rebel group seized control of the town of Nzibira in Walungu Territory, South Kivu, Lt Gen Pacifique Masunzu was accused of playing a role in the incident.

He is also accused of providing false intelligence information to the national army, which allegedly led to poor operational decisions based on the misinformation he supplied.

Masunzu, who hails from Minembwe in South Kivu Province, had been in charge of the army’s Third Military Zone  covering North Kivu, South Kivu, Maniema, Ituri, Tshopo, Bas-Uélé, and Haut-Uélé provinces  since December 2024.

The general is also accused of being behind the series of drone attacks that have recently targeted AFC/M23 positions in both Kivu provinces, as well as civilian-populated areas.

He is further alleged to have ordered the drone strike that killed Brigadier General Michel Rukunda, known as “Makanika,” a former commander of the Twirwaneho self-defense group, which was formed to protect Congolese citizens of Banyamulenge ethnicity.
